God won't give you more than you can handle...

"God won't give you more than you can handle." Won't He? That's not even what the verse says. It says in 1 Cor. 10:13, "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humankind. God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear." We need to exchange our feeble platitudes for authentic faith that engages God with the full brunt and force of our emotions and pain. The deep current of those emotions and fear that threaten to overtake us. There is a fracture in our universe that threatens to swallow us up in pain. So what do we do? Where do we turn? It's easy to sprout trite Christian platitudes designed to make people (and ourselves) feel better with bumper-sticker theology. But insipid axioms do very little in the face of the actual brokenness of the world - of the circumstances that threaten to drown us. Limp, anemic sentiments will not stand in the face of a world that is not as it should be. Trust me, I know. When it all becomes too much; when we have nothing left; when we are empty and beyond our capacity to deal with it....in that moment the strength that passes understanding...the strength of Almighty God will be seen. As long as we rely our ourselves, our strength, our intellect, our resources, our ability to "handle it" , we won't experience authentic faith that engages God with the full brunt of our emotion, fear, and pain. Let go. Let God.
